User Guide – How to craft effective AI prompts for generating tables and charts

1. Be specific about the expected output type

➡ Bad prompt:

Give me a table about sales.

➡ Good prompt:

Create a table with 3 columns: Month, Product, Revenue. Include 12 rows (January to December) and fill with realistic fictional values in dollars.

2. Define the column structure

  • Specify column headers.
  • Define the expected data type (numbers, percentage, text, date).

Example:

Create a table with 4 columns: Country (text), Population (millions), GDP/capita (USD), Growth (%).

3. Request the final format

  • Markdown Table (readable directly in the extension).
  • CSV (easy to export to Excel or Power BI).
  • Chart (bar, pie, line, etc.).

Example:

Give me the data in CSV format with `;` separator.

Chart example:

Create a bar chart comparing the population of 5 European countries.

4. Provide sample data if needed

If you already have partial data, give it to the AI for completion, cleaning, or transformation.

Example:

Here's my raw data (copy-paste) → clean it and create a table with only Name, Age, City columns.

5. Specify the level of detail

  • Global summary (e.g., totals, averages).
  • Line-by-line detail (e.g., individual transactions).

Example:

Give me a sales summary by region with total and average.

6. Think about associated charts

Once the table is created, you can request a visualization:

  • Bar chart
  • Pie chart
  • Line chart
  • Histogram

Example:

With this table, generate a pie chart showing each product's share of total revenue.

7. Combine tables + charts

➡ Prompt:

Create a table with monthly sales (Jan-Dec), then make a line chart to visualize the trend.

🎯 Quick Summary (user checklist)

✅ Always specify the output type (table, CSV, chart).

✅ Clearly name the columns.

✅ Define the format (Markdown, CSV, JSON).

✅ Indicate if you want a chart and which type.

✅ Provide an example or raw dataset if available.
